Our History


2008: Dr. Caroline Andrew and Dr. Elizabeth Kristjansson, two professors from the University of Ottawa, had a vision to increase the number of youth applying to post-secondary education. A pilot program called Youth University was launched with the support of a team of mentors. Its goal was to expose the 35 participants to the different faculties and programs offered at the University as well as introduce them to community involvement with the help of the City of Ottawa’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.
2009: Youth University continued to grow in its efforts to recruit first-generation youth from under-serviced communities. The City of Ottawa’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services provided the participants with leadership training which included training in communication, resume preparation and First Aid/CPR certification in addition to the university experience.
2010: A new component was added to the leadership training and university experience: summer employment. The participants had the opportunity to work for part of the program to gain work experience and apply the skills that they had acquired during their leadership training.
2011: The program changed its name to Youth Futures to better match its newly expanded program and opportunities as well as the increasing number of participants taking part in the program. A new logo was developed and new partnerships were formed in the hopes that Youth Futures would continue to grow and reach out to more youth.  Ottawa Community Housing, took over the coordination of Youth Futurescollaborating closely with the University of Ottawa and the City of Ottawa
2012:  The number of participants accepted into the program increased to 60 participants.IMG_0989
2013:  The employment component of the program welcomed its first private sector Champion, Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) Law Firm which hosted the first fully subsidized employment placement.  The new YF website is launched; www.youth-futures.com/www.avenir-jeunesse.com
2014:   The number of participants accepted into the program increased to 75 participants.  All 5 post-secondary institutions in Ottawa, including Algonquin College, Carleton University, La Cité, Saint-Paul University and the University of Ottawa offered to host a day of programming.  Ottawa Police Services joined the Youth Futures Champions Table.

 What are the outcomes?

Since 2008 over 375 youth living in social housing, receiving social assistance and/or coming from low-income neighborhoods have participated in our program. The completion rate is over 95%.
